How to conjugate a French verb / conjuguer un verbe - French beginner (Fle A1)

First of all, revise this;

Je = I

Tu = you (informal "you", used with friends, family or young people)

Il = he

Elle = she

Nous = we

Vous = you (formal "you", with people you don't know or when you want to show respect. Also when you're speaking to a group)

Ils = they (a group of men only or a mixed group)

Elles = they (a group of girls only!)

Note; there isn't any difference in pronounciation between "il" and "ils" or "elle" and "elles". The context of the conversation makes the difference obvious.

Ok, so what do you notice here? 

You have the infinitive verb, parler (to speak). "Infinitive" means the word you'll find in the dictionary.

You want to conjugate it, meaning to use it in conversation (I speak, you speak...). In English, you conjugate as well; I speak, he speaks, she speaks, they speak... So "speak" changes according to whom you're talking about. Same in French.

Of "parler", take out the "er" bit, which is like "to" in "to speak". So, you are left with "parl". Add, what is in red in the example.

Here are some other regular verbs (regular means that they follow the pattern we've just studied. Some verbs are a bit strange and you'll have to memorize them. We call them "irregular verbs"). A good news; 90% of French verbs are regular!

Aimer = to like or to love

Arriver = to arrive

Demander = to ask

Entrer = to enter / come in

Chercher = to search / to look for

 Regarder = to look

 Donner = to give

Rester = to stay
